A New York State of Mind: Part Three

I'm told the best way to experience NYC is to get out and walk around. This was the case on Sunday since Vince Chase was hungover from all the Jameson shots we downed, leaving me and Kristine to hop on the train and do some exploring on our own.

First stop, The Met.

I tried to swagger jack but couldn't pull it off

Union Square

Dessert before dinner is always a good idea

Still no dinner but let's have drinks at Decibel

I've heard of "a hole in the wall" but this joint was a straight up hole in the floor. Crazy!

Is that Coolio on the menu?

Vince and Cool Jenn haha

I flew to NYC to meet and kick it with people from LA haha. Introducing Dana (ReFresh Hater) and Kris (Soul Sessions) =)

Beer cozy smuggling. Don't ask!

Drunk and inconsiderate. "AaAaaaYYyyyYyyYe!"

All in all, good times! Ate a lot, drank a lot, and walked it all off. Can't wait to go back and do it all again.

Much thanks to the homie Buddhabong for playing tour guide and subway expert - I Love You, Man! Also thanks to Soulacist for coming out to kick it and taking the hi-res shots. Hot-dog-in-a-bun-style fo life!

Peace out NYC, had a blast...

A New York State of Mind: Part Two

One thing about this trip to NY: It was non-stop. Early to rise, late to bed. Gotta get it in and go hard if all 3 days were gonna be fully utilized.

This is what we woke up to, a room...

...with a view. Ground Zero: Cool and eerie all rolled into one.

This is as close as we got. Good enough for me.

A New York State of Mind: Part One

The $3 t-shirt I picked up on Canal St. in Chinatown said it best: I Love New York

From the social vibe, the 4am last call, the food, the New York minute-pace, to the reported 2:1 girl/guy ratio, it's a city in which I can flourish. For two minutes, I even contemplated moving there, which is how long it took MC to text me back and remind me that I would probably crawl my ass back to Cali as soon as winter hit. Maybe I can spend spring and summer there...

Ok enough reflection, onto the trip!

Missed my 6:30a flight but it was cool because I bumped into none other than The Natural himself, Randy Couture! Dude was super cool and patiently waited while I dug my camera from deep inside my backpack. Yes, I was super geeked.

After we land at JFK, we hop a cab into Manhattan and learned why all NY cabbies should compete in Formula One. No pics here, I was too busy covering my face and peeking through my fingers like a little girl.

We settle into the hotel and immediately head out (we only have 3 days, sOnn!) The first night was action packed, to say the least.

My first rooftop party (no kids, Monte Cristo doesn't count!). You needed a password to get in this joint, reeediculous!

Joint of The Day 04.28.09: Tha Dogg Pound - New York, New York

Just b/c I'm still on that NYC tip...

A lot of you will probably say that "Let's Play House" was the best track off the album but I was in high school dreaming of rollin in a black Acura Integra GS-R and this was going to be the track blasting out the speakers.

"Tonight's the night for me to rip microphones into bits and pieces. Lyrical telekinesis..."

Say wha?! I dunno. All I know is that it would've sounded good over the JL subs that I would've installed in the imaginary Integra.

Effin Imeem

For some reason, Imeem likes to throw wrenches at my site and the media players that I use for "Joint of The Day" are only playing 30 second snippets of tracks.

I'll figure out the deal is and have it back up in a jiff.

Yeah, I just used "jiff". And.....?

F*ck land, I'm On A Boat!

Big ups to A. Fio for this one, straight tom foolery on the open seas!

Billy's Balls is just some guy that you probably don't want to mess with in beer pong. It's DC basketball video meets Balls of Fury!

Joint of The Day 04.24.09: Afu-Ra - Whirlwind Thru Cities

My bags are packed. Macbook, PSP, and cell phone are all charged. Now I just gotta get some rest before my 6:30a flight. Just thought I'd hit you all off with this fitting classic.

Catch ya'll on East Coast time!

Schhhwing!

Last week, 2BK emailed me and asked me if I was familiar with this "toy" known as The Barrel Man. Now, any Filipino worth their salt will know what's up with this infamous wooden dude. When I was a kid, it was just kinda normal to go into a Tita Baby's house and see him chillin on the mantle next to the iced and gold lame'd out Santo Nino.

My shorthand explanation to her:

It's basically a wooden carving of a man with a disproportionately sized, spring loaded weiner. There's a wooden barrel that goes over the man, giving him some covering while pushing down his junk. The punchline is when you lift the barrel and his thing springs out. Hours of fun!

Here's the Wikipedia explanation.

It's been around forever so I'm a little jaded when the barrel goes up but that's not the case for the uninitiated. Could you imagine if I had homeboy posted up on my desk at work?!

Now that I think about it, 2BK made me realize how much of an inside joke The Barrel Man really is.

So for the unfamiliar...get familiar!

Waxing non-sensically about Filipino culture, one blog post at a time.

Joint of The Day 04.21.09: The Clipse Ft. Kanye - Kinda Like A Big Deal

The Clipse are back with a new track!

Not quite as back-to-the-basics as "Grindin" and not the dirty club anthem that was "When The Last Time", this new joint falls somewhere in between. The minute the Hendrix-like guitar riff comes in, I feel like I'm in the beginning of a new Tarantino flick.

Kudos for the Kaws collabo on the cover artwork. Extra kudos for the title channeling 'Anchorman'. Now I'm just waiting for The Cool Kids to drop "I'm In A Glass Case of Emotion".
