Mixwell

Mixwell is another brand I used to rock hard back in the day. It was geared towards DJs and they had a lot of very dope designs. I've thrown away all but these 3 pieces that I thought were worth holding on to. Check it!

Probably my favorite Mixwell shirt, a flip on the ever recognizable "Titleist" logo. In the battle heyday of the 90s, every DJ was claimin to be a Turntablist; some were and some weren't. I must have worn this in damn near every battle I did.

This is just a dope shirt featuring one of my favorite DJ crews of all time, the world famous Beat Junkies. Also a spoof-type shirt, they flipped the OG Polydor logo and made it their own. Picked this up at the Word of Mouth show at The Glass House.

Last but definitely not least is this shirt, made for the 2002 World Records battle.

Peep the semi-finalist roll call!

For those that don't know, I didn't always go by "ReFresh" ;)

Styles by Exile

I give producers a lot of props for the way they literally create something out of nothing. I geek out watching the creative process and the way all the different pieces come together. I've always wanted to get a drum machine, just to mess around on and channel my inner J-Dilla.

Aside from the "Pushing Buttons" routine by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and Numark, I've never really seen drum machines used as the sole medium in a performance. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled onto these videos of this cat Exile gettin so nice on the MPC. So ill!

Then he just wiles out and rocks this fresh rendition of "A Milli". Damn, I suck.

Instant DJ TOOLbox

For all the fake, wannabe, jump-on-the-trend cats out there, now you can be a DJ too!

Sneak of The Week: Ep 9

These Nike Dunk Hi SBs, better known as the De La Soul Hi, are either the freshest shoes you've ever seen or the downright ugliest. I own a pair so it's obviously the former for me.

Hate em or love em, you can't deny that these are some crazy ass looking kicks. Between the green elephant print on the toebox to the "3 Ft. High & Rising" album artwork on the heel, this shoe has something for sneaker and hip hop heads.

Not for sale. Strictly for Me, Myself, and I ;)

Joint of the Day 06.17.09: Lil Wayne - Kobe Bryant

LA Lakers: 2009 NBA World Champs

It was an anti-climactic result but whatever, LA has reason to celebrate again. Today is the parade in downtown and as much as I'd like to check it out for once, I just don't think I'm down to deal with all that madness. An online stream is probably the way to go here.

I've got a dual screen setup at work. I'm sure I'll be OK =)

SaturDO

I balanced out the Friday madness with a nice, chill Saturday. After sleeping in, I woke up and hit up Mario's Peruvian with The Do. I've heared so much about this place so I finally decided to try it out. The lomo is the business but no calamari appetizer had me wishing for Mamita's. Still good grubbin tho!

After setting ourselves up for major food coma, we hit up Arclight to catch UP 3D. Unfortunately, the beasts are still out for this movie so we had to watch Terminator Salvation instead. My verdict? It was aight...a definite purchase on Blu-Ray tho!

After the movie and a quick change of clothes, we were off to Alibi to get our Kogi taco fix. Jenn and 2BK (in her first KBBQ taco experience!) met us up and we kept it real Seoul with short rib tacos, sliders, and glasses of Hite.

Finished off the night at Bottle Rock with a glass of red. Thanks 2BK!

And as if Saturday wasn't chill enough, Sunday was even more chill. Apartment browsing and watching the Laker game with the fam.

Oh yeah and we finally caught UP 3D. Two thumbs UP!

Yes. We are...

...dorks. Can you blame me though? I haven't seen a 3D flick since Captain EO! haha

CHEERS: Filipino/Hollywood Edition

Last Friday, I had a rare night off from spinning so I decided to jet out to The Highlands for the birthday celebrations of a few friends.

One word to sum up the night: Reunion.

It's always good to see old faces that you normally don't get to see because of the number of events nowadays, people "retiring" from the scene, and even club promoter politics.

Bumpin music, strong drinks, eye candy = good times!

Look who was in town!

Twisted, looking for a 24hr ramen spot. Freakin Koraku...

Joint of The Day 06.11.09: Jay-Z - D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)

T-Pain freaked it. Kanye did too. So did Ron Browz and BEP. I now think it's safe to say that Autotune has jumped the shark and I'm glad that one of my favorite MCs of all time has decided to speak on it.

The title may be D.O.A. but it's more of a P.S.A., ya dig?!

Sneak of The Week: Ep 8

Let's keep the vintage goodness going...

I remember that the Zoom Flight 95s came out around the time the import scene was in full effect and carbon fiber was becoming the trim of choice for everything from shift knobs to dash overlays.

It was a Nike shoe with a freakin CF-like pattern on it. Cats were beasting to put it on their cars and Nike does them one better by covering the upper and midsole of a sneaker in it! Do I have to say that this was in 1995?!

Dear Nike, I want those groundbreaking days back...

One to rock, one to stock, and my Original Gangsters (never been worn sucka!)

Got the blue colorway too, now looking for the red and green CWs.

ReFresh x Buddy x Jolo The Cholo

First off, I want to thank everyone who tuned in and caught my debut on DJ Buddy TV. I'm used to DJing in the relative anonymity of a dark DJ booth so it was a little nerve wracking to play under the "studio lights" with a camera staring me in the face.

Besides that, I had a blast! I got a chance to play some stuff that I normally don't get to rock at clubs and didn't have to worry about keeping the floor filled. Buddy was an awesome host/MC and Jolo The Cholo let the whole world know how he felt about Spencer and his flesh colored beard ("I love you Heidi! Fuck you, Spencer!").

If you missed out or just want to re-live the awesomeness (ha!), you can watch the whole thing below.

There's gonna be plenty more episodes worth catching so make sure you tune in to DJ Buddy TV every Wednesday night from 10p-12a PST!

Joint of The Day 06.10.09: Sister Nancy - Bam Bam (DJ Fashen Remix)

Unless you've been living under a rock, I'm sure you've heard the original version of this Sister Nancy classic. You've also likely heard a dozen remixes from reggaeton to drum and bass.

However, I never heard it flipped quite like this. From the opening beats, to the vocal loop buildup, and pretty much the rest of the way through, this joint BANGS. DJ Fashen, you're a damn fool for this one!

Even though its well over a year old, it's still JoTD-worthy just cuz it'll be one of those classic remixes that was done so well. In my opinion anyway.

Til I find/get a streaming version up, peep this vid from Banana Split, which is where I first heard it. AM and Stretch are geeked!
